I’m convinced that the single biggest factor that determines your ability to accomplish your goals is your belief in your ability to succeed.
What you believe is your truth.
But what you believe may not be THE truth.
For the longest time, I believed that I wasn’t good at putting together furniture.
I remember the first time I tried to assemble furniture. I was 14 and I put together a small desk.
The thing was the wobbliest thing ever!
Any little touch, and it started to do a little dance.
It didn’t become functional till my uncle came over one day.
With a few minutes and some screwdriver magic, the “thing” transformed into an actual usable desk.
That one failed attempt led me to believe I couldn’t assemble furniture.
In my adulthood, any time I got something that needed to be put together, I found someone else to do it because of “my truth”.
This past Sunday though, I put together a headboard and platform bed all by myself. 🤓
So how did this person who can’t put furniture together all of a sudden put together a whole ass platform bed and headboard?
A few years back, my dryer suddenly stopped working. I was very willing and ready to have a professional come and fix it.
But unfortunately, the multiple people I contacted weren’t picking up my calls.
I got impatient and hopped onto YouTube to find some suggested fixes.
After watching a few videos, I took the dryer apart. I ordered the part that was problematic from Amazon. I put in the new part. I tested it. And voila… the dryer was back up and running and working fine.
Once I realized I fixed that dryer all by my lonesome, I had an aha moment…
It was never that I was bad at putting things together.
I was bad at putting furniture together if the information wasn’t presented in a way that made sense to me.
I learned that I need a visual (preferable) or a detailed step-by-step to “get it”.
Once I had decided my truth though way back when, I never explored the possibility that I was wrong. So I never got to my realization that my truth was not the truth.
At least not until a variation of the truth came about after my dryer revelation.
After my dryer success, I started fixing more things around the house using YouTube with more success.
Little by little, my confidence in my ability to fix things started to grow.
I eventually started getting small furniture items that required assembly.
This headboard though, is my biggest furniture assembly yet!
And I am happy to report that everything feels sturdy, and I have not woken up on the floor.
So, I am officially a VERY confident furniture assembler. 🙂
As we start this new year, and you reflect on what you wanted to do last year but didn’t.
And as you think about what you plan to do this year…
I challenge you to question yourself on the things that you believe you cannot do.
Are your thoughts and beliefs actually true?
You might find that like me, your truth isn’t the truth.
And the perspective shift very well may change how this year shapes up for you.
